Conundrum is truly a California wine, produced with grapes from the Napa, Monterey, Santa Barbara and Tulare counties. The exact composition of this white wine is never revealed, however, it is made up of a range of grape varieties. The Sauvignon Blanc comes from the Napa Valley, where the weather is warm enough to bring out this grape’s green-melon-like character at one vineyard site, and its fresh-cut-grass character at another site. These grapes are harvested first. The next grapes to ripen are Muscat Canelli, from warm Tulare County. Muscat is the grape that gives Conundrum its high-toned, floral aroma, along with some equally floral, cool-climate Viognier grown in Monterey County. Most of the Chardonnay and other varietals are grown in Monterey County, one of the coolest, driest growing regions in California. The Chardonnay grapes are harvested last, to allow the grapes to develop deeply ripe flavors and golden color while retaining great natural acidity. Conundrum is owned by the Wagner family of Caymus Vineyards, but stands on its own as a separate brand. Charlie Wagner and Jon Bolta share responsibilities of the proprietary wine. In 2007 production expanded into a state-of-the art winery in Monterey County close to the sources of the most grape varietals that make up the wine.
