John Gilman, View From the Cellar 93 points: The new release of the Ployez family’s Extra Brut Rosé is a blend of fifty-five percent Pinot Meunier, thirty-nine percent Chardonnay and six percent Pinot Noir. As ten percent of the blend is still red wine, one has to assume that a significant percentage (all of it?) is still Pinot Meunier, with the still wine aged in oak barrels. The bouquet is excellent, offering up a spicy and vibrant mélange of blood orange, quince, cloves, beautifully complex minerality, a dollop of wheat toast and orange peel in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and tightly-knit, with a lovely core of fruit, great soil signature, very refined mousse, zesty acids and outstanding length and grip on the complex and perfectly balanced finish. This is high class Rosé that is very long on elegance and intensity of flavor.
Wine Spectator 93 points: Showing lovely balance, this creamy Champagne displays fine, silky texture and an undertow of smoky mineral and ground spice meshed with flavors of black currant and crème de cassis, hazelnut, grated coconut and wild strawberry. Mouthwatering and delicious.
Josh Reynolds, International Wine Cellar 92 points: Bright orange-pink. Intense blood orange and strawberry scents show very good clarity and pick up toast and floral nuances with air. Juicy, penetrating and pure, offering vibrant red berry and citrus fruit flavors underscored by chalky minerals. Dusty and clean on the finish, which shows excellent focus and persistence.
Winery notes: We only produce Rosé wines in years when the quality of the black grapes is really very good. They are all produced by blending Extra Quality Brut champagne (blending the first pressings of premier grand crus with a majority of black grapes), to which a small amount of red champagne is added. Each harvest provides us with different structures and colour intensities. Adding red wine allows us to ensure the colour remains stable and precise. It allows us to create an expressive blend delicately combining the expression of red berry aromas and a rich, long finish, while maintaining its intensity. Our red wines are produced in our oak casks, revealing a very light, elegant hint of woodiness. We use very small dosages to allow all of the wine’s fruits and aromas to filter through. Tasting: Beautiful bubbles. Very fresh pink colour. Fruity, fresh bouquet. Clear finish and unnoticeable dosage.
